Carbopol gel (often misspelled as Carpabol or carbapol in clinical records) is a mucoadhesive topical formulation composed of high molecular weight polymers of acrylic acid, known as carbomers. In a clinical trial conducted by Cairo University (NCT04343430), this gel was utilized as a placebo control to evaluate the efficacy of a topical coenzyme Q10 gel for the management of recurrent oral aphthous ulcers (stomatitis). While Carbopol is primarily a pharmaceutical excipient used to create stable gel bases and control drug release, its mucoadhesive properties allow it to form a protective physical film over mucosal surfaces. This barrier can provide symptomatic relief by shielding open ulcers from external irritants and mechanical trauma, although it was designated as the inactive vehicle in the specific Cairo University study.
