Overview

Carboprost is a synthetic analogue of prostaglandin F2-alpha used primarily as a uterotonic agent. It induces strong myometrial contractions by binding to the prostaglandin E2 receptor, leading to expulsion of uterine contents and hemostasis at the placental site. Clinically, it is indicated for the treatment of severe postpartum hemorrhage due to uterine atony when other interventions have failed and for inducing abortion in the second trimester (typically between weeks 13–20), especially when other methods are incomplete or contraindicated. Carboprost also stimulates smooth muscle in the gastrointestinal tract and may cause side effects such as vomiting or diarrhea[1][2][5][6].
