Carboprost Methylate is a synthetic analog of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α), primarily utilized in obstetrics and gynecology. It functions as a uterotonic agent, stimulating strong uterine contractions. Its mechanism involves binding to specific prostaglandin F receptors on the surface of uterine smooth muscle cells, which activates the phospholipase C (PLC) pathway. This activation leads to an increase in intracellular calcium, ultimately resulting in muscle contraction. Carboprost Methylate is used for indications such as the management of postpartum hemorrhage and the termination of pregnancy. It is also being investigated for cervix pretreatment before hysteroscopic diagnosis.
