Carboxin is a systemic fungicide primarily used as a seed treatment in agriculture to protect crops such as barley, beans, canola, corn, cotton, oats, onions, peanuts, rice, rye, safflower, sorghum, soybeans, triticale and wheat from fungal diseases including smut and rot[1][4][7]. It was first marketed by Uniroyal in 1969 under the brand name Vitavax[4]. Carboxin acts by inhibiting succinate dehydrogenase (SDHI), specifically binding to the quinone reduction site of mitochondrial complex II in fungi. This inhibition disrupts the electron transport chain and tricarboxylic acid cycle by preventing ubiquinone from functioning properly; as a result ATP production is halted and fungal cell death occurs[4][6]. Carboxin exhibits systemic movement within plants after application. It has low acute toxicity for humans and non-target organisms but may pose risks to aquatic life at certain concentrations[3][6].
