Refresh Optive is a topical ophthalmic lubricant formulation developed by Allergan for the symptomatic relief of dry eye disease. It is a combination product containing carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC) and glycerin. CMC is a high-molecular-weight polymer that acts as a mucoadhesive lubricant, increasing tear viscosity and prolonging retention time on the ocular surface by binding to corneal epithelial cells. Glycerin serves as a demulcent and osmoprotectant, helping to shield the ocular surface from the damaging effects of hyperosmolarity, which is a primary driver of inflammation and cell damage in dry eye syndrome. The product line includes various formulations, such as preservative-free single-use vials and multi-dose bottles, as well as specialized versions like Refresh Optive Mega-3, which incorporates flaxseed and omega-3 oils to support the lipid layer of the tear film.
