Overview
Carbutamide is a first-generation sulfonylurea oral hypoglycemic agent that was primarily used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It acts by stimulating insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells, thereby lowering blood glucose levels. Carbutamide was one of the earliest sulfonylureas developed and was marketed under the brand name Glucidoral. The drug was developed by Servier and patented in 1953, with approval for medical use granted in 1956. However, it has since been withdrawn from many markets due to toxic effects on bone marrow and other safety concerns[1][2][4][7].
