Overview

Cardamom, derived from the seeds of the plant *Elettaria cardamomum*, is being investigated for its therapeutic potential in managing atopic dermatitis (DOID_3310) due to its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. The active constituents of cardamom, including essential oil components like 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) and the chalcone cardamonin, are thought to modulate the immune response by suppressing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6. In the context of atopic dermatitis, cardamom extracts have demonstrated the ability to inhibit Th2-mediated inflammatory pathways and reduce oxidative stress, which are key drivers of skin barrier dysfunction and chronic inflammation. While primarily used as a spice and dietary supplement, its extracts are being explored in preclinical and pilot studies for their efficacy in reducing skin lesions and systemic inflammatory markers associated with atopic conditions.
