CardioCell is an allogeneic, cell-based regenerative therapy consisting of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) isolated from Wharton's jelly, the umbilical cord matrix. Developed by researchers at John Paul II Hospital and Jagiellonian University Medical College in Krakow as part of the CIRCULATE project, it is classified as an advanced therapy medicinal product (ATMP). The therapy is designed as an 'off-the-shelf' standardized therapeutic agent for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and other ischemic cardiovascular conditions, such as critical limb ischemia. CardioCell functions through multiple paracrine mechanisms, including the promotion of angiogenesis, inhibition of apoptosis, reduction of inflammation via the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, and the exertion of antifibrotic effects to facilitate the repair of damaged cardiovascular tissue.
