Overview

Cardioviva is a branded, heart-health probiotic containing a patented strain of Lactobacillus reuteri NCIMB 30242 (also marketed as LRC) developed originally by Micropharma as a disease-specific, biomarker-linked therapeutic bacteria product for cholesterol management.[1][8] In randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials, oral supplementation with this strain lowered low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and total cholesterol in adults with hypercholesterolemia, leading to approval of cardiovascular health claims by Health Canada and FDA “Generally Recognized as Safe” (GRAS) status for use in foods and supplements.[1][3][5][7][14] The probiotic acts by producing bile salt hydrolase (BSH), which deconjugates bile acids, thereby reducing intestinal cholesterol absorption and increasing fecal and metabolic elimination of cholesterol, while also providing general probiotic benefits for digestive and immune health.[1][3][5][14] Cardioviva has been commercialized as a dietary supplement and as an ingredient for functional foods by Micropharma and, following acquisition of the underlying IP and brand, by UAS Labs.
