Overview
Carefungi is an oral antifungal medication containing itraconazole (200 mg), developed and marketed by Surecare Pharma. It belongs to the triazole class of antifungals and is indicated for the treatment of various superficial and systemic fungal infections, including those affecting the skin, nails, mouth, throat, vagina, and internal organs. Carefungi works by inhibiting the fungal enzyme lanosterol 14α-demethylase (CYP51), which is essential for the synthesis of ergosterol, a key component of the fungal cell membrane. This inhibition disrupts membrane integrity, leading to increased permeability, leakage of cellular contents, and ultimately fungal cell death.
