Overview

Cariprazine is an atypical antipsychotic and a piperazine derivative used primarily for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar I disorder, including manic, mixed, and depressive episodes. It is also approved as adjunctive therapy for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. Cariprazine acts mainly as a partial agonist at central dopamine D2 and D3 receptors (with higher affinity for D3), as well as serotonin 5-HT1A receptors, and functions as an antagonist at serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. The drug was first developed in Hungary by Gedeon Richter[1][5]. Its mechanism of action involves modulating neurotransmitter activity in the brain to reduce psychosis, mania, depression, and related symptoms[1][3][4].
