Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Caripul (epoprostenol sodium)** is a prostacyclin analogue indicated for long-term intravenous treatment of idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (iPAH), heritable PAH (HPAH), and PAH associated with connective tissue disease in NYHA Class III/IV patients unresponsive to conventional therapy. Developed by Actelion Pharmaceuticals (now part of Johnson & Johnson) and marketed in Canada by Janssen Inc., it acts as a potent pulmonary and systemic vasodilator by mimicking prostacyclin, relaxing vascular smooth muscle and inhibiting platelet aggregation to reduce pulmonary vascular resistance and improve exercise capacity. Administered via continuous infusion through a permanent central venous catheter, it requires hospital initiation due to risks like hypotension and sepsis, with common side effects including headache, jaw pain, nausea, flushing, and infusion site infections.[1][2][3][4][5][9]
