Overview

Carlecortemcel-l is an ex vivo expanded umbilical cord blood cell therapy developed for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in patients with high-risk hematologic malignancies. The product consists of a graft of expanded stem/progenitor cells derived from part of a single unit of umbilical cord blood, which is transplanted intravenously along with the remaining unmanipulated fraction. The expansion process uses cytokines and the copper chelator tetraethylenepentamine to increase the number of CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells without promoting differentiation. This approach aims to improve engraftment rates and early survival following transplantation compared to standard double-unit cord blood transplants. Clinical studies have shown that carlecortemcel-l can facilitate faster neutrophil and platelet engraftment and may be associated with improved 100-day survival rates in recipients[3][4][5][7]. The drug was initially developed by Gamida Cell in collaboration with Teva Pharmaceutical Industries.
