Overview

This drug is a combination chemotherapy regimen known as VBMCP, consisting of five agents: carmustine, cyclophosphamide, melphalan, prednisone (or prednisolone), and vincristine. It is primarily used in the treatment of multiple myeloma and has also been studied for primary systemic amyloidosis. The regimen combines several alkylating agents (carmustine, cyclophosphamide, melphalan), a corticosteroid (prednisone/prednisolone), and a vinca alkaloid (vincristine). The mechanism of action involves DNA cross-linking and inhibition of cell division by the alkylating agents; immunosuppression and anti-inflammatory effects by the corticosteroid; and disruption of microtubule formation by vincristine. This multi-agent approach aims to maximize cytotoxicity against malignant plasma cells through different mechanisms[1][3][6].
