Overview

This is a combination chemotherapy regimen consisting of four agents: - Carmustine (also known as BCNU), an alkylating nitrosourea that crosslinks DNA and RNA, inhibiting cancer cell replication. - Mitomycin-C, an antitumor antibiotic that acts as a bioreductive alkylating agent, causing DNA crosslinking and strand breakage. - Prednisone, a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties; in oncology it induces apoptosis in certain lymphoid cells. - Vincristine, a vinca alkaloid that inhibits microtubule formation in mitosis, arresting cell division. This combination has been studied for use in metastatic breast cancer refractory to conventional agents. The regimen is not widely used or standardized under any specific acronym but has been evaluated for efficacy and toxicity. In clinical studies, the combination showed limited response rates with moderate to severe thrombocytopenia as the main toxicity[1]. Each component targets different aspects of tumor biology—DNA synthesis/repair (carmustine/mitomycin-C), immune modulation (prednisone), and mitotic inhibition (vincristine)—to maximize cytotoxicity against cancer cells.
