Overview

Carnitine orotate is a compound formed by combining L-carnitine, an amino acid derivative essential for the transport of long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria for β-oxidation and energy production, with orotic acid, a precursor in nucleic acid biosynthesis. The combination acts synergistically to promote fatty acid metabolism and support liver function. Carnitine orotate is primarily used as a hepatoprotective agent to improve hepatic steatosis (fatty liver), normalize alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels, and enhance glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity. It has shown benefits in metabolic diseases such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), obesity, metabolic syndrome, dyslipidemia, and type 2 diabetes by improving mitochondrial function and reducing oxidative stress in hepatocytes[1][2][4][5][6]. The drug is available under brand names such as Godex DS.
