Carnosine is a naturally occurring dipeptide composed of beta-alanine and L-histidine. It is synthesized in the body and found at high concentrations in skeletal muscle as well as the brain and heart. Carnosine acts as an antioxidant by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS), chelating divalent metal ions, and inhibiting glycation processes that contribute to aging and tissue damage. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and can buffer pH in muscle tissue during intense exercise. Carnosine has been investigated for its potential benefits in conditions such as diabetes complications (e.g., nephropathy), neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Alzheimer's disease), aging-related disorders, autism spectrum disorder symptoms, depression, heart failure, and Gulf War Illness[1][2][3][4][5]. Its mechanism of action includes antioxidant activity through ROS scavenging and metal ion chelation; antiglycation effects; anti-inflammatory actions; pH buffering; inhibition of lipid peroxidation; modulation of energy metabolism; protection against protein oxidation[4][5][6].
