CaroRx

CaroRx is a plant-produced secretory IgA (SIgA) monoclonal antibody developed by Planet Biotechnology for the prevention of dental caries (tooth decay). Produced in genetically modified tobacco plants (*Nicotiana tabacum*), it is one of the first 'plantibodies' to undergo human clinical testing. The antibody specifically targets the SAI/II surface adhesion protein of *Streptococcus mutans*, the primary bacterium responsible for tooth decay, thereby inhibiting its ability to adhere to the tooth surface. CaroRx is applied topically as an oral solution and is designed to be administered as a passive therapeutic vaccine every several months. While it received marketing approval in the European Union as a medical device, its Phase II clinical development in the United States was discontinued in 2016.
