Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Carotenoid-rich tomato extract is a dietary supplement derived from tomato pulp—primarily yellow tomato—extracted using supercritical CO2 methods. It is standardized to contain a high concentration of carotenoids, notably phytoene and phytofluene (typically up to 10%), plus zeta-carotene (≤5%), beta-carotene (≤0.5%), and lycopene (≤0.4%). The extract provides antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties through the neutralization of reactive oxygen species and support to lipid and skin health. Clinical studies report effects such as protection against UV-induced skin damage, enhanced skin barrier function, improved skin firmness and elasticity, and potential modulation of inflammation. Unlike purified lycopene, the extract delivers a spectrum of tomato carotenoids and phytonutrients which may contribute synergistically to health benefits. Principal applications are as a nutraceutical for skin health and antioxidant support[1][2][3][4][6].
