caroxazone

Caroxazone is a small molecule antidepressant that was formerly used for the treatment of depression but has been withdrawn from the market[1][2][3]. It acts as a reversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase (MAO), with activity against both MAO-A and MAO-B subtypes and approximately five-fold selectivity for MAO-B[1][2][3][4]. As a reversible monoamine oxidase inhibitor (RIMA), it increases levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine by inhibiting their breakdown. Clinical studies indicated that caroxazone was effective and well-tolerated in treating depression[7]. It is classified chemically as a benzoxazine derivative.
