*Carpobrotus edulis* methanolic extract is a botanical extract derived from the succulent plant *Carpobrotus edulis*, commonly known as the sour fig. Research conducted at the University of Johannesburg has investigated its potential as an anticancer agent, specifically targeting pancreatic cancer. The extract and its isolated compounds, such as 7,9-Ditert-butyl-oxaspiro [4.5] deca-6,9-diene-2,8-dione and 1-octadecanol, appear to induce apoptosis in MIA PaCa2 pancreatic cancer cells without affecting non-cancerous MRC-5 cells. Mechanistically, the extract activates the extrinsic TNF-mediated apoptosis pathway, increasing TNF expression and caspase 3/7 activity, while inhibiting cell growth through the downregulation of STAT3.
