Overview
Carprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the propionic acid and carbazole class, structurally related to ibuprofen, naproxen, and ketoprofen. It was previously used in human medicine but is now approved only for veterinary use, primarily in dogs. Carprofen is indicated for the relief of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and postoperative pain in dogs. Its mechanism of action involves selective inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) over cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1), reducing prostaglandin synthesis involved in inflammation while minimizing gastrointestinal side effects typical of less selective NSAIDs. Carprofen has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic properties[1][2][4][7].
