Overview

*Carthamus tinctorius* extract, commonly known as safflower extract, is a botanical product derived from the flowers or leaves of the *Carthamus tinctorius* plant. It contains a variety of bioactive compounds, most notably quinochalcones such as hydroxysafflor yellow A (HSYA), carthamine, and safflor yellows A and B, as well as flavonoids like luteolin. Preclinical research indicates that the extract possesses significant anti-inflammatory properties, primarily through the inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) and the suppression of the NF-κB signaling pathway. It is also investigated for its hypolipidemic effects, demonstrating the ability to reduce total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL levels in animal models of hypercholesterolemia. In traditional medicine, particularly in Indonesia, it is known as Kasumba Turate and used for various ailments including rheumatoid arthritis.
