Overview

Cartia is a low-dose aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) formulation, typically provided as 100 mg enteric-coated tablets. It is primarily used as an antiplatelet agent to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack) and ischemic stroke in patients with known cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease. By irreversibly inhibiting the cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) enzyme, it prevents the synthesis of thromboxane A2, a potent mediator of platelet aggregation. The enteric coating is designed to allow the tablet to pass through the stomach and dissolve in the small intestine, thereby reducing the risk of gastric irritation commonly associated with aspirin use. The brand was formerly owned by GSK and was divested to Aspen Pharmacare in 2012 as part of a portfolio of over-the-counter (OTC) consumer health products in international markets.
