Overview

Cartibeads are bioengineered cartilage mini-implants developed for the regeneration of articular cartilage, particularly in the knee. They consist of high-quality hyaline cartilage microtissues produced from either autologous (patient-derived) or allogeneic (donor-derived) chondrocytes. The technology enables mass production of chondrocytes that retain their original phenotype and can self-integrate into damaged cartilage lesions, promoting effective tissue regeneration. Unlike existing solutions that often result in fibrocartilage formation, Cartibeads generate true hyaline cartilage, which is more similar to native joint tissue. The product is designed to address focal lesions and early osteoarthritis and has shown promising results in preclinical studies and early clinical trials. Vanarix, the developer, has received Orphan Drug Designation from the US FDA for Cartibeads in treating osteochondritis dissecans.
