Cartipatch is an autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) product in which a patient’s own articular chondrocytes are harvested, expanded ex vivo, and then delivered as a suspension within a three-dimensional agarose–alginate hydrogel scaffold for implantation into focal cartilage defects of the femoral condyle. The hydrogel matrix allows even distribution of viable chondrocytes and molding of the implant to the defect, supporting formation of hyaline-like repair cartilage and restoration of joint surface congruity and function in patients with symptomatic focal knee cartilage lesions who have typically failed prior conservative or surgical treatments. Developed in France by the Tissue Bank of France in Lyon, Cartipatch has been evaluated in phase I–II and phase III trials comparing outcomes to microfracture for femoral condyle cartilage defects.[5][1][9]
