CARTISOME is an investigational exosome-based therapeutic candidate developed by Exostemtech for the treatment of osteoarthritis. It consists of exosomes derived from stem cells, specifically mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which are engineered or selected for their regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties. These exosomes function as intercellular communication vehicles, delivering a bioactive cargo of proteins, lipids, and microRNAs directly to the joint environment. The therapy aims to stimulate chondrocyte proliferation and extracellular matrix synthesis while simultaneously modulating the inflammatory milieu by suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines. By addressing both tissue degradation and chronic inflammation, CARTISOME is designed as a disease-modifying osteoarthritis drug (DMOAD) that potentially offers superior outcomes compared to traditional palliative treatments. It is currently in the IND-enabling phase of development.
