Cartistem is an allogeneic cell therapy product composed of human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCB-MSCs), developed for the treatment of knee cartilage defects resulting from degenerative osteoarthritis or repeated trauma. The product is surgically administered directly into the affected area of the knee at a dose tailored to defect size. Cartistem’s mechanism involves stimulating endogenous self-regeneration by providing naive MSCs that can differentiate into cartilage and support tissue repair, without pre-differentiation before administration. It was first approved in South Korea in 2012 and represents the first regenerative medicine product manufactured from cord blood to achieve regulatory approval globally[1][2][3][5][7]. Medipost is actively expanding clinical development internationally, including planned Phase 3 trials in North America[8].
