Carvasept (also known as chlorcarvacrol, 5-chlorocarvacrol, or monochloroisothymol) is a small molecule derivative of carvacrol, a monoterpenoid phenol. It is primarily used for the treatment of hemorrhoids, anal fissures, and pruritus ani. The compound exhibits antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Its mechanism of action involves disruption of microbial cell membranes—specifically increasing membrane permeability—which leads to leakage of cellular contents and cell death. This activity is attributed to its chlorine atom and phenolic hydroxyl group that enhance its ability to penetrate microbial membranes. In addition to its clinical use in anorectal disorders, studies have shown potential antifungal efficacy against Candida species and anti-inflammatory effects in gastrointestinal models. There are also emerging data suggesting possible anticancer activity through induction of apoptosis in cancer cells[1][2][5].
