Overview

Carvativir is an antiviral oral solution containing a modified form of isothymol, which consists of isomers such as carvacrol and thymol derived from essential oils of plants like oregano and thyme. Developed in Venezuela by the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC) and the Labomar laboratory, it was specifically promoted as a treatment for COVID-19. The drug is purported to work by disrupting the lipid envelope of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and inhibiting the interaction between the viral Spike protein and host cell receptors. Despite its emergency use authorization in Venezuela, Carvativir remains highly controversial within the international scientific community due to the absence of peer-reviewed clinical trial data supporting its safety and efficacy.
