Overview

Carvedilol + empagliflozin is a combination of two small molecule drugs used together, though not as a fixed-dose combination product. Carvedilol is a non-selective beta-adrenergic antagonist (beta-blocker) with additional alpha-1 adrenergic blocking activity, primarily indicated for the treatment of heart failure, hypertension, and left ventricular dysfunction following myocardial infarction. Empagliflozin is a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor that lowers blood glucose by preventing renal glucose reabsorption and also reduces cardiovascular risk in patients with type 2 diabetes or heart failure. The combination may be used in patients with comorbid cardiovascular disease and diabetes or heart failure to address both glycemic control and cardiac function[2][5][6]. There are moderate drug interaction risks when these agents are combined; careful monitoring for hypotension, hypoglycemia (especially if other antidiabetic agents are present), dehydration, and electrolyte disturbances is recommended[1][3].
