Overview

Carvedilol + metoprolol is a combination of two beta-adrenergic antagonists (beta blockers) used in the management of cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension and heart failure. Carvedilol is a non-selective beta blocker that also blocks alpha-1 adrenergic receptors, resulting in vasodilation and decreased peripheral vascular resistance. Metoprolol is a selective beta-1 adrenergic receptor blocker, primarily affecting cardiac output by reducing heart rate and contractility. Both drugs lower blood pressure and reduce myocardial oxygen demand but differ in their selectivity for adrenergic receptors and side effect profiles. The combination of these two agents is not standard clinical practice due to the risk of additive effects leading to bradycardia or hypotension; concurrent use should only occur under close medical supervision[1][4][5]. Each drug individually has demonstrated efficacy in reducing mortality and hospitalizations in patients with heart failure[2][6].
