Overview

Carya cordiformis pollen extract is a biological diagnostic agent derived from the pollen of the bitternut hickory tree. It is used in clinical settings for the diagnosis of pollen-induced allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and asthma through skin prick or intradermal testing. Upon administration, the allergens in the extract cross-link specific IgE antibodies bound to the surface of mast cells and basophils in sensitized patients, resulting in the release of histamine and other mediators that produce a visible wheal-and-flare reaction. It is primarily used as an in vivo diagnostic tool rather than a therapeutic agent.
