Overview

Carya ovata pollen is a non-standardized allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the Carya ovata plant, commonly known as the shagbark hickory tree. [9, 11] It is classified as an allergenic biologic and is primarily used for the diagnosis of immediate hypersensitivity allergies to shagbark hickory pollen. [3, 7] Administration is performed by physicians via percutaneous, intradermal, or subcutaneous routes for skin testing. [7] The extract can also be used for immunotherapy to reduce allergen-induced symptoms in sensitized individuals. [7] The active ingredient is the pollen extract, which elicits a localized Type I hypersensitivity reaction in allergic patients, confirming sensitization. It is distributed by companies specializing in allergy solutions, such as ALK-Abello and Stallergenes Greer. [12, 13]
