Overview

Caryophylli cortex water extract (WCC) is a botanical natural product derived from the bark of the clove tree, *Syzygium aromaticum*. It is currently being investigated as a potential immune checkpoint inhibitor for the treatment of various cancers, particularly colon cancer. The extract's primary mechanism of action involves the downregulation of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression on cancer cells, which prevents the exhaustion of cytotoxic T cells and enhances their anti-tumor activity. Preclinical studies in humanized PD-1/PD-L1 knock-in mouse models have demonstrated that WCC can significantly reduce tumor growth and increase the infiltration of CD8+ T cells into the tumor microenvironment. Key bioactive compounds identified in the extract include bergenin, chlorogenic acid, and ellagic acid. As of current research, the extract remains in the preclinical stage of development.
