Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Casein glycomacropeptide (CGMP) is a bioactive sialylated phosphorylated peptide derived from milk during the cheese-making process. It is naturally low in phenylalanine, making it an ideal protein source for individuals with phenylketonuria (PKU). To ensure nutritional completeness, CGMP is supplemented with specific amino acids—typically histidine, leucine, tyrosine, arginine, and tryptophan—to create a complete protein substitute (CGMP-AA). This combination is more palatable than traditional amino acid-based formulas and is used to manage metabolic disorders like PKU, tyrosinemia, and alkaptonuria. Additionally, CGMP-AA is being investigated for its ability to modulate plasma amino acid levels and reduce dopamine precursors, potentially serving as a treatment for acute manic episodes in bipolar disorder.
