Overview

Casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP), often marketed under the trademark RECALDENT, is a bioactive milk-derived protein complex used in preventive dentistry. It consists of casein phosphopeptides (CPP) that bind and stabilize calcium and phosphate ions in an amorphous, non-crystalline state (ACP). This complex adheres to tooth surfaces, dental plaque, and surrounding soft tissues, creating a reservoir of bioavailable calcium and phosphate. By maintaining a state of supersaturation relative to tooth enamel, CPP-ACP buffers plaque pH, inhibits demineralization, and promotes the remineralization of early non-cavitated carious lesions (white spot lesions). It is commonly used in topical pastes, varnishes (often in combination with fluoride), and chewing gums to treat dental caries and dentin hypersensitivity.
