Caspofungin is a lipopeptide antifungal drug belonging to the echinocandin class. It acts by noncompetitively inhibiting the enzyme (1→3)-β-D-glucan synthase, which is essential for fungal cell wall synthesis, thereby compromising cell wall integrity and leading to fungal cell death. Caspofungin is primarily indicated for the treatment of invasive infections caused by Candida and Aspergillus species, including candidemia, esophageal candidiasis, intra-abdominal abscesses or peritonitis due to Candida, and as empirical therapy in febrile neutropenic patients suspected of having a fungal infection. It is administered intravenously and was developed by Merck & Co., Inc. Caspofungin was the first echinocandin approved by the FDA and is included on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines[1][5][6].
