Overview

Cassia alata cream is a topical botanical drug candidate being developed by The University of The West Indies for the treatment of tinea versicolor, a common fungal skin infection caused by *Malassezia* yeast. Derived from the leaves of the *Cassia alata* plant (also known as *Senna alata*), the extract contains bioactive anthraquinones, most notably chrysophanic acid (chrysophanol), which possess significant antifungal activity. The mechanism of action involves the inhibition of fungal growth and the potential disruption of cell membrane integrity in dermatophytes and yeasts. This specific 20% cream formulation is currently undergoing clinical evaluation in a pilot study to establish its safety and therapeutic efficacy as a natural alternative to synthetic antifungal agents.
