Overview

Cassia fistula fruit is the pod of the Cassia fistula tree, a medicinal plant widely used in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. The elongated pods contain pulp rich in bioactive compounds including lupeol, anthraquinones (such as rhein), flavonoids, kaempferol, and clerosterol. The fruit is primarily known for its laxative effects and is used to treat occasional constipation—often in combination with senna leaf extracts[2][4][8]. It also exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial (antibacterial and antifungal), hepatoprotective, antidiabetic, wound healing and potential antitumor activities[1][3][5]. Mechanistically these effects are attributed to its phytochemicals that modulate oxidative stress pathways and inflammatory mediators. In some regions it has been formulated into products like Tamarine syrup for constipation relief[2].
