Overview

Cassia nomame is an annual herb from the pea family (Leguminosae) traditionally used in East Asian medicine and consumed as tea. The pharmaceutical form is typically an extract from the above-ground parts of the plant. Chemically, it contains flavone derivatives (flavonoids), chalcone and aurone derivatives, anthraquinones, phenolic compounds, and sterol derivatives[2]. Its principal pharmacological effect is **inhibition of intestinal lipase activity**, leading to reduced dietary fat absorption and, accordingly, potential **weight loss**[7][4][5][10]. The extract also has **antioxidant properties** (radical scavenging) and has demonstrated reduction of oxidative stress and cellular injury in animal models, including myocardial ischemia-reperfusion[3][2]. Traditional uses include constipation, diuretic effects (increasing urine output), reduction of swelling, and general tonic for health/wellness[4][7][10].
