Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cassia seed refers to the dried ripe seeds of the plants *Cassia obtusifolia* or *Cassia tora*. Widely used in traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda for centuries[5][10], cassia seeds are known for their cooling and purgative properties. They are primarily used to clear heat from the body and liver[3][7], improve vision (especially for red or irritated eyes), promote bowel movements (relieve constipation), support digestive health[2][6], lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels[8][10], protect the liver[5][9], exhibit antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects[2][7], aid in weight management by promoting regular elimination of waste products from the body[2][6]. The main active compounds include anthraquinones (responsible for laxative effects) as well as antioxidants such as ellagic acid. Modern research has also explored their potential benefits in conditions like hypertension,[5] hyperlipidemia,[8] diabetes,[1] atherosclerosis,[8] fatty liver disease,[5] neuroprotection in Parkinson’s models,[5] skin diseases,[9] and eye disorders including dry eye syndrome.[10]
