Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cassia seed extract is an extract prepared from the dried ripe seeds of Cassia obtusifolia or Cassia tora, commonly referred to as Cassiae semen in traditional Chinese medicine[1][2]. It contains a variety of bioactive compounds, predominantly anthraquinones (such as aurantio-obtusin, rhein, emodin, chrysophanol) and naphthopyrones, as well as other constituents like quercetin and volatile oils[2][5][6][8]. The extract has been traditionally used for its laxative, hepatoprotective, antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and lipid-lowering effects[1][5][3][6]. Pharmacological studies have shown that cassia seed extract exhibits antibacterial, antiallergic, neuroprotective, and cardioprotective activities, likely through mechanisms such as inhibition of inflammatory mediators (including histamine and cytokines), antioxidant actions, and modulation of vascular tone and lipid metabolism[3][5][8].
