Castor oil

Castor oil is a vegetable oil derived from the seeds of the castor bean plant (Ricinus communis). It is primarily used as an over-the-counter stimulant laxative to treat constipation and for bowel evacuation prior to medical procedures. The main active component is ricinoleic acid, which constitutes about 90% of the fatty acids in castor oil. The pharmacological effects are mediated by ricinoleic acid released by intestinal lipases; it acts as a selective agonist at Prostaglandin E receptor 3 (EP3) on smooth muscle cells in the intestine and uterus, promoting increased intestinal motility (laxation) and uterine contractions. Castor oil is also used topically as an emollient for skin and hair care[1][2][3][4][6][7].
