Overview
Castor oil emulsion is a pharmaceutical formulation in which castor oil is dispersed as small globules within an aqueous medium using an emulsifying agent such as acacia. The primary active component of castor oil is ricinoleic acid, which acts as a stimulant laxative by activating EP3 prostanoid receptors on intestinal smooth muscle cells to promote peristalsis and bowel evacuation. Castor oil emulsions are used primarily for the temporary relief of occasional constipation and for bowel preparation prior to diagnostic procedures or surgery. The emulsion form helps mask the unpleasant taste of pure castor oil and may improve patient compliance[1][4][7].
