Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cat hair allergen extract is a biological preparation developed by ALK-Abelló for the treatment of cat allergy through sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT). The extract is standardized based on its concentration of Fel d 1, the primary allergen responsible for cat-induced allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. Administered as sublingual drops, the therapy works by inducing immunological tolerance through the modulation of T-cell and B-cell responses. It promotes the expansion of regulatory T cells (Tregs) and the production of IgG4 blocking antibodies, which compete with IgE for allergen binding, thereby shifting the immune response away from a Th2-mediated allergic profile. This specific formulation has been evaluated in Phase II clinical trials using environmental exposure chambers to assess its safety and efficacy in reducing symptoms upon natural exposure to cats.
