Canine adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (cAT-MSCs) are multipotent stromal cells harvested from canine fat tissue, widely utilized in veterinary medicine for their regenerative, immunomodulatory, and tumor-homing properties. These cells are particularly attractive as delivery vehicles for anti-tumor molecules because of their innate tropism for the tumor microenvironment. In oncology research, cAT-MSCs are often genetically engineered to express therapeutic cytokines, such as interferon-beta (IFN-beta), to provide targeted delivery directly to malignancy sites. Studies have demonstrated that IFN-beta transduced cAT-MSCs can significantly inhibit the growth of canine melanoma cells and induce apoptosis, especially when used in combination with low-dose chemotherapy agents like cisplatin. Beyond oncology, cAT-MSCs are also investigated for treating inflammatory and degenerative conditions in dogs, such as osteoarthritis and atopic dermatitis.
