Cat pelt extract is a standardized allergenic extract used for the diagnosis and treatment (immunotherapy) of patients with cat allergies. [5, 10] The extract is prepared from defatted and dried cat pelts, which consist of hair and the entire epidermis. It is a biologic product whose primary active ingredient is the Fel d 1 allergen, though it also contains other non-Fel d 1 allergens like cat serum albumin. [3] The extract's potency is standardized by quantifying its Fel d 1 content against FDA reference standards, and it is labeled in Bioequivalent Allergy Units (BAU/mL). [5] Administration is through percutaneous testing for diagnosis, intradermal testing for diagnosis, or subcutaneous injection for immunotherapy, with the goal of inducing hyposensitization in patients. [10] It is not interchangeable with standardized cat hair extract, which has a different allergen profile. [3, 5]
