Overview

Citrizan is a topical enzymatic gel containing equine catalase (800,000 IU per 100 g) used to promote the healing of skin wounds. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of chronic cutaneous ulcers, such as those resulting from venous stasis, and superficial second-degree burns. The active ingredient, catalase, is a naturally derived enzyme that facilitates the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide into water and molecular oxygen. This enzymatic activity helps reduce oxidative stress in the wound environment, which can otherwise impede tissue repair, thereby creating a more favorable environment for regeneration and wound closure. Developed and marketed by IDI Farmaceutici (associated with Farmaceutici Damor) in Italy, Citrizan has been evaluated in phase 3 clinical trials comparing its efficacy and tolerability to other topical treatments like Fitostimoline.
