Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Caterpil is a topical pain-relieving gel developed by Bion Therapeutics. It is formulated with a combination of active ingredients, including diclofenac (1.5%), linseed oil, methyl salicylate, menthol, camphor, and capsaicin. The gel is designed for the localized management of musculoskeletal pain, inflammation, sprains, strains, and joint discomfort associated with conditions such as arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Diclofenac acts as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2) to reduce prostaglandin synthesis. Methyl salicylate, menthol, and camphor function as counter-irritants that stimulate sensory receptors (such as TRPM8 and TRPV3) to produce cooling and warming sensations, thereby distracting from deeper pain. Capsaicin desensitizes local nociceptors by activating and subsequently defunctionalizing TRPV1 channels, while linseed oil acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and penetration enhancer to facilitate deep tissue absorption.
